Organic Link Building Strategies for 2012

Organic link attraction is a key goal of good search engine optimization. I’ve blogged regularly about this so see recent posts for more useful information.

Organic link building is about getting other people to naturally link to your site, because they like the content and they like what you do. Follow any one of these five tips and you should find your organic link building improves – follow them all for a concerted campaign to get better quality links more regularly.

1: Content first. The purpose of organic link building is to use your content as a hook to get real people to give you links because they really want to. So your content has to enthuse them. This refers to on page content and off page content too., If you publish articles, make them genuinely interesting and informative. If you blog (and you should blog), be opinionated and bold. There’s a lot of web out there so you need to stand out from the crowd.

2: Start doing more Facebook stuff. The social sphere is where it’s at, these days, for everybody.  From business to pleasure, everyone spends hours connected to social media sites – so if you want a higher profile you should too. And you need to do it right. Be a genuine personality, with real things to say. Don’t fall into the trap of trumpeting your company name for all it’s worth, with nothing behind it to make what you’re doing worthwhile.

3: Use newer methods of inspiring interest. Video files, apps and interactive games are great ways to get people posting links to content associated with your site. Get hold of some retro games, quick to load and full of good memories, and post them on your blog. Or develop an app that can win prizes for its users. Give your followers things they’ll love, and they’ll pass those things on. Every time they do is a new link in the bank.

4: Look at your site design. Is it simple and easy to use? Can you see immediately what each page is about or do you have to work it out? Is every piece if information on the site in the right place, and imparted in the right medium? A video file is better for a product description, in some cases, than words. The UX of your site is vital to the success of any organic link building campaign.

5: Think about time and date specific promotions. There’s nothing like creating regular time specific giveaways to get people passing word around about your site. Remember Orange Wednesdays? The principle applies to any brand selling anything. As soon as your followers know that you’ll be posting some kind of interactive promotion on a given day, your traffic will go through the roof – and as word spreads your links build too.

Organic link building, like all good search engine optimization, is about creativity. Find consistently interesting ways to engage with your fans and they’ll reward you with links.
